Social media continues its rise – “Gangnam Style!”

Halfway around the globe a catchy tune goes viral – then global. Was it radio that made this happen? Television? Print advertising? A global multi-million dollar campaign? No. It was you, your friends, your friend’s friends and all those connected to you socially. That is the power of social media.

The song “Gangnam Style,” was released on July 15, 2012. As of today, September 25, 2012, his music video has been viewed on Youtube more than 267 million times; making it Youtube’s most watched Korean-pop video. It has already been featured in some of the most prestigious media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and CNN International. According to its Wikipedia page (yes, it already has one), “Gangnam Style” flash mobs have started to appear in various capitals around the world, and “Gangnam Style” has become the source of features and parodies in various locations including Dodger Stadium, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and even Samsung commercials.

A company may not have the next PSY or viral dance moves, but it does have the opportunity to create a social media strategy that connects its brand to its circle of “friends.” As social media continues its rise, the question to ask yourself is; will you? How important do you think social media is to a business’ success? Get social and leave a comment! We’d love to hear from you!
